Sephora Must-Haves for Under $50

Sephora is the modern woman's candy store. As soon as you walk in, your head starts spinning because of the endless rows of colorful makeup, beauty tools and fragrance. If you are like me, your disposable income isn't very high, so picking up all your beauty essentials here is not an option. That being said, when you do have some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket there are some items that I think are worth the higher price. Here is a breakdown of my Sephora must haves, all under $50.

I admit, I was so skeptical about buying this sponge for 20 bucks. I just couldn't justify the price tag, but I decided to pull the trigger anyway. Find any YouTube beauty vlogger and chances are they use the beautyblender. It really does make your foundation look seemless and I actually end up using less product than when I applied with a traditional makeup sponge. If you do purchase one, just remember to read the instructions on how to use it and keep it clean!

This foundation has been in my rotation for 3 years now. That is the longest I've ever sticked to one beauty product. I like to change things up with other types of makeup, but this cream foundation stays on all day and keeps oil at bay so I can't stay away. The coverage is great and a little goes a long way, so you'll end up saving some money in the long run. Another plus is that it comes in a wide variety of shades for every skin tone.

3. Lancôme GRANDIÔSE Mascara - $32

Don't be fooled by this crazy-looking mascara. The bend in the wand really does make a difference. I have always loved Lancôme mascaras, but this one takes the cake as my favorite. It might even be my favorite higher priced mascara. It takes practice to maneuver the wand, but once you get the hang of it the bend helps you see everything you are doing and twist and turn to get every last lash. The formula is another thing I like about it. Whenever I wear this, I never see flakes under my eyes at the end of the day and it never gets clumpy! Well worth the price.

4. Ralph Lauren Big Pony #3 Rollerball - $21

Rollerballs are perfect if you can't shell out the $80+ it costs for a full bottle of perfume. Sephora has lots of fragrances in rollerball form, so you can pick out the one you like or buy multiple as they typically cost around $25. They are easy to throw in your backpack or purse and even a small clutch for a night out. You can also get by airport security with these since they comply with TSA regulations.

5.Too Faced Boudoir Eyes Palette - $36

I usually hate eyeshadow palettes, or any kind of makeup palette for that matter. I usually buy one for a hefty price tag and only use about 3 or 4 colors. This one however, I use every single color on a pretty consistent basis. The colors range from pretty neutrals to darker shades to create a smoky eye. The price isn't too high either, so it is definitely worth a shot!

6. SEPHORA COLLECTION Face the Day Brush Set - $49

If you are still using the little brushed and applicators that come inside your eyeshadows and powders, you need to drop everything you're doing and go buy a brush set! Seriously though, you will be amazed at how different it will make your makeup look. I just got a nice brush set for Christmas and I will never go back to using the little foam things that come with the makeup you buy at the drugstore. Quality brushes transfer color much better and your complexion will appear smoother and seamless. I suggest getting the most expensive set you can get with whatever budget you have. Also, make sure that most of the brushes in the set are appropriate for your makeup routine. For example, if you don't use or like gel eyeliner, then try to find a set without an eyeliner brush or smudging tool.

7. SEPHORA COLLECTION Sculpt: Curling Iron - $40

I swear by my curling wand. I could never get the hang of using a curling iron with a clip. My curls would never come out even and when I did get a good curl, there was always a visible kink where I placed the clip. With a wand,  the curls come out flawless and I can curl my very long hair in about 10 minutes. This Sephora Collection wand is reasonably priced and is the perfect size for creating beachy waves or bigger, looser curls. It heats up very quickly and gets very hot, so for the first couple times you use this wear the heat-resistant glove.

8.  St. Tropez Self Tan Express Bronzing Mousse - $44

I cringe every time I see a woman buying self tanner from a drugstore, with maybe the exception being Jergens' gradual tanning lotion. I've used the Jergens lotion before and have had good results, but it builds a tan over a longer period of time, so it doesn't get too orange. The others just leave you feeling like an Oompa Loompa. If you are going to use a one-and-done, at-home tanner, then you have to spend a little money. St. Tropez is the holy grail of self tanners because their formulation is unbeatable. The tans never come out orange and actually smell good unlike the ones from a drugstore. To beat streaks and uneven or darker patches, make sure to use a tanning mitt, which can be bought via Amazon, and exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

The Right Way to Splurge

Although this blog is about saving money in college, sometimes you need or to splurge a little bit. I'm really into handbags, so after working 6 days a week for 7 months I went out and bought myself a bag that I always wanted. What's life without rewarding yourself every once in a while? Splurging is totally okay, if you can afford it without forcing yourself to eat ramen for a month. Whether your rewarding yourself for a successful internship or job or treating yourself to a birthday gift, there are some tips to keep in mind while shopping to make sure you are getting the most out of your hard earned cash. I've broken it down into typical items us college girls like to lust after and given you some examples.

Handbags

  • Examine the exterior, interior, stitching, hardware, and handles - You want the bag to hold up for a while and not fall apart as soon as you put a heavy laptop or book inside. Also, look for bags with saffiano leather. It wears well and resists scratches.

  • Opt for a neutral color - This ensures that you'll get the most use out of the bag and can wear it with all types of outfits.

  • Choose a bag with multiple interior pockets and handles/straps - Pockets will keep your things in order and within easy reach, while a bag with handles and a crossbody strap can be worn day or night.

Jeans

from left to right: J Brand - $158.00, Citizens of Humanity - $188.00, AG - $168.00, Lucky Brand - $139.00

  • Keep the wash to a dark blue or black - Anything else will look too trendy and you won't get to wear them as often or with as many tops.

  • Wash them only when you absolutely have to! - This sounds gross but seriously, it will make your jeans last 5x longer. Don't believe me? Levi Strauss' CEO suggests only spot cleaning them and never machine washing or drying them. Anderson Cooper is also a big supporter of this technique.

  • Choose a skinny or straight leg style - These are the most versatile styles since you can wear them with boots, flats, or heels. They look good cuffed too! Don't be afraid to try on as many pairs or brands as you can to find your perfect fit.

Heels

from left to right: Kate Spade - $298.00, Stuart Weitzman - $365.00, Via Spiga - $195.00

  • Pick a classic, pointy toe pump - this style will go with literally everything in your closet. The shape also makes your legs look longer. Black or nude colors are best.

  • Go for the highest heel that you feel comfortable in - if you are okay with a heel higher than 3 inches the go right ahead. You're going to wear these shoes to work, nights out and other special occasions, so make sure that the heel hight can work for all situations.

  • Never choose suede - Suede is very delicate and doesn't get along with water. It also, in my opinion, is more appropirate during the colder months. If you buy a pair in leather or patent leather, then they will last longer and look good all year round.

Little Black Dress

from left to right: Diane von Furstenberg - $368.00, Theory - $138.00 (reg. $398), BCBG - $248.00, Vince - $325.00

  • Again, go with a solid, neutral color - keeping the dress color simple will allow you to style it in countless ways and dress it up or down. It doesn't have to be black. Navy and cream colored dresses are just as versatile.

  • Opt for silhouettes that aren't too form-fitting and that you can move in - Any dress that you don't feel comfortable in will instantly go to the back of your closet and you will barely wear it. This dress is supposed to be a wardrobe staple and one that you can wear all day long.

  • Pick the right fabic - The best fabrics are either a knit or jersey. These will keep you comfy and don't wrinkle easy. If they do get wrinkles, ironing them is a breeze. Anything silk, chiffon, or lace will look too nighttime or cocktail party.

Not Your Average Jeans and Tee

I'm all for jeans and a t-shirt. Its a classic look and can be casual or dressed-up depending on how you style it. An alternative to the normal tee and jeans look is to have fun with different denim styles like colored or printed. One tip is to keep the top understated and let your jeans be the statement piece. For an added flare, wear strappy sandals like the ones below. Another tip, Boohoo has petite and plus size jeans on their website, so short and curvy girls rejoice!

tee - Forever 21 $12.90, metallic jeans - Kohl's $28.16 (reg. $88), snakeskin jeans - Juicy Couture $34.97 (reg. $178), green jeans - Macy's $26.99 ( reg. $44), distressed jeans - BooHoo $44.00, black sandals - Nordstrom Rack $49.97, nude sandals - Nordstrom Rack $26.97

Spring Breakers

I know it might not feel like it, but spring break is approaching fast. The holidays just ended, so needless to say, our bank accounts are suffering a little bit. If you are fortunate enough to escape to somewhere warm for break, here are some nice-weather necessities for your trip. As always, every item is under $50 which means more mojitos! Hope this gives you some ideas on what and how to pack. Happy travels!

Swimsuits

from left to right: fringed bikini - top $26.00 bottom $17.50, one piece - $28.00, printed bikini - top $26.00 bottom $14.00, yellow bikini - top $19.00 bottom $14.00

Nobody really likes shopping for swimwear, but ASOS makes it as easy and painless as possible. First, their selection is huge and is really fashion-forward. Another plus is that they have a wide variety of sizes, including options for women with larger chests or who wear plus sizes. In addition to the great selection and size options, shipping is free when you spend $40 and returns are free as well. No more trying on in a dimly lit dressing room with wonky mirrors. All the picks above are from ASOS, but seriously check out the site because there are lots more styles sure to fit anyone's taste.

Coverups

from left to right: JC Penny - $19.99 (reg. $40.00), Macy's - $48.00, Target - $24.99, Macy's - $48.00

What's a good bikini without a cute coverup? I'm really into ones that you can wear straight from the beach to a casual lunch spot. By adding some fabulous accessories, you can skip changing in a disgusting bathroom or traveling back to your hotel. The ones above are perfect pieces for this, especially the black maxi dress. You are guaranteed to wear it all break long. To find the perfect coverup, choose ones without see-through material and great detailing.

Wedges

from left to right: Target - $20.98 (reg. $29.99), DSW - $29.94, Payless - $39.99

Nothing says spring break and warm weather like breaking out those open-toed wedges. Wedges are great shoes for when you want to dress-up a bit, but keep it low-key. Make sure to pack a pair for when you go out to dinner or a night-out. There are so many options out there, so whether you like to keep it neutral or wear bright colors and prints you will be set for your trip.

Beach Bag Essentials

photo credits: H&M, Target, Best Buy, Hearst, Havaianas, Vera Bradley, Ulta, Hattan Home

hat - H&M $12.99, sunglasses - Target $14.99, portable charger - Kate Spade $49.99, magazines - Cosmopolitan $12.00/year, sandals - Havaianas $32.00, towel - Vera Bradley $35.00, tinted moisturizer - Clinique $27.00, water bottle - S'well $42.00, lip balm - Eos $3.49, hair brush - Wet Brush $11.99, swimsuit bag - Vera Bradley $38.00, coconut oil - OGX $7.99

I always seem to miss packing something into my beach bag, but here I've outlined some must-haves for dealing with the sand and waves. The most important picks from above are the skin and lip care because nobody wants a painful sunburn or chapped lips. Be sure to use regular sunscreen on the rest of your body though! Skin cancer is not a good look. Another useful item is the swimsuit bag from Vera Bradley. Putting your wet suit in this will keep the rest of your belongings dry and sand-free. To keep yourself entertained and give yourself more time relaxing, pack a couple magazines and a portable cell phone charger.
